Living in a fast paced world which is arguably equivalent to an episode of The Bachelor (minus the gorgeous dresses which would make my wallet cry and petty dramas over a damn rose), life can be pretty damn hectic. With all this absolute mayhem comes worries, perhaps even anxiety and feelings of inadequacy – or in my case, like someone has just taken a massive chunk of the cynical molecules in the crux of my soul. But how do we get rid of these inadequacies? Well that’s a question I’m still seeking myself but I do have a few things which help me to calm the hell down…
Appreciation – dwelling on the awesome vs the crappy
Amongst all the chaos and drama we come across, we can dwell on the not so good aspects in life. Perhaps you’re concerned about family, friends, work (or lack thereof- if you’re a Melbourne employer, hire me plz. I’m as desperate as a nun looking for a chapel), the future or just life in general. We tend to forget all of the amazing things we are fortunate enough to have. For starters, be thankful that you have a phone , laptop or dare I say it… a windows device to even read this article. Materialism and windows banter aside, other things to be grateful for is the fact you’re alive, healthy and given the pleasure of having a life. Most of us have family and friends around us who are there to put up with our relentless topics of nothingness and spontaneous irritability (or I that just me?). Think about hobbies and things that make you happy- movies, meaningless banter, intense retail therapy, hysterical laughter, sentimental inside jokes, free wi-fi, h&m trackpants. Need I go on? Life is filled with some pretty rad things, it’s only a matter of looking at the bigger picture in life and dwelling more on the awesome things and less of the crappy.
Mindfulness – a way to look at the bigger picture
This is a form of meditation that allows you to observe your surroundings, thoughts and sensations in a non-judgmental way and to essentially live in the moment. It’s a way of getting to know your thinking patterns and seeing the world in a whole new perspective. I’ve just starting using this as a form of relaxation and do this for as little as 5 minutes a day and it really does wonders to help me relax, alleviate stress and helps me feel a sense of contentment. If you’re interested in giving it a try, I use the app ‘Smiling Mind’.
Stop comparisons – pfft, who needs that awesome car anyway
I kid you not, I am guilty of doing this. This blog and articles I write are filled with so much comparative figurative language, it’s enough to make an English teacher cry with happiness. But weirdness, awkwardness and all, I am a completely different person to you, me and the entire population of the human race. Comparing yourself to others doesn’t get you anywhere, may make you feel inferior or feel the need to ‘live up’ to some imaginary standard that you’ve created. Comparison of others would be the equivalent to comparing almond butter to a veggie curry laksa. Both are types of food (and freakin’ delicious might I add) but both are different. Just like we’re all humans but we’re all different. Who gives a damn if blah blah has an awesome car or if blah blah looks so ridiculously good looking, that it should be illegal to have such aesthetics. We all make our own life journeys at different speeds, have different interests and are all people on the verge of (or is currently) doing something amazing. Your OWN future awaits so why be a replica of someone else’s journey?
