What you need to be a typical Melbourne Vegan...
1.The handy dandy must have app
No vegan starter pack would be complete without an app that tells you the best places to eat picked by locals in your area! I cannot stress enough how much the stay.com app has been a lifesaver and it can be used WORLDWIDE! Where've you're based - in Melbourne, London, Paris, Barcelona (it has over 150 destinations!), with the click of a button the stay.com app allows you to find restaurants that cater to your dietary requirements or cravings all over the world! Craving a smoothie bowl? Is your friend lactose in tolerant? Keen for Asian stir fry? the stay.com has got you gal! Also, since it’s a travel the app, it has descriptions of the best attractions, shopping areas, entertainment places, city guides (and so much more) in your area!
You can download the app here:
- from the app store
- from google play

2.A place to curb the angry monster
And in the grand scheme of things, here's when we get into the nitty gritty... here's a list of some popular eateries where us Melbourne vegans hang. Just do out thang and chill, whilst sipping on soy, dairy/cruelty/GMO free organic chai lattes on second hand stools straight outta Fitzroy.
mainstream vegan restaurants
These can be found in a Melbourne City Guide I wrote for the stay.com app. It's a guide to all the mainstream (but nonetheless delish) Vegan eateries I love!
not as mainstream but damn good restaurants:
If you’ve most likely eaten (religiously) at the restaurants mentioned in my Melbourne City Guide, don’t you fret, here’s a list of more places to chill when the Vegie Bar line is too long…
the trendy pressed juice bar
A vegan classic. Jam-packed with cylindrical glass bottles, wooden cutlery and a superfood haven.
Popular times of consumption: pre workout or for the mainly sedentary, when you’re just so damn thirsty.
Typical Outfit: Active wear or a casual but snazzy country road pullover
Where to go: Home Juice Bar
Why? Their glass bottles bring those Voss ones to shame, so much juice variety, super cleansing and bonus points for having amazing desserts!
Would recommend: macadamia cake, ginger Ninja

the raw restaurant
The place where ovens and stove tops would smile with glee. These menus consist of raw food, have a tendency to have wooden stools and a small but trendy restaurant space. This is the perfect place to recover after yoga and coming to the realisation that you really suck at the downward dog (or is that just me....)
Typical Outfit: drenched in activewear, yoga mat on hand, usually hair is pulled back- most likely in a bun.
Where to Go: Izakaya Shoku
Why? Their smoothie variety is out of this world.

the hipster cafe
Most likely located somewhere trendy (Fitzroy, I’m talking ‘bout you). Mismatched furniture, indie photo frames. mason jars, red bearded men (Bonus points if NOT located in Fitzroy) are a common occurrence.
Where to Go: Admiral Cheng Ho
Why? Not located in Fitzroy (a rarity), cool vibe, good service, a bangin’ menu
Would recommend: Buckwheat Pancakes, Acai Bowl

the allrounder
Having a not completely vegan menu, this one’s for people who are eating with people who aren’t vegan. Their menu usually has some hidden vegan gems hidden on their menu.
Where to Go: Las Chica’s Café
Why: Vik’s Vegan Wrap. That is all I need to say…
Would recommend: VIK’S VEGAN WRAP YES CAPS IS NEEDED.

the influencer restaurant
Common prerequisites include large social media following, insta worthy & aesthetically pleasing food, a ridiculously relaxing atmosphere
Where to Go: Matcha Mylkbar
Why? They serve vegan eggs, have innovative matcha concoctions and hilarious menu puns
Would recommend: any dish that has their egg, matcha pancakes and all of their smoothies!!

Hope you liked this starter pack.
And if you're in activewear right now, straight from gym, sipping on green juice or on your way to brunswick st, I won't judge you.
