Australian Open Adventures pt.2
Who would have known that I, foodbloggerandrea of sound mind and under average height would even think of heading to the place of bouncy fluro balls yet again. Surprisingly, I had a fun time going to the Australian open last time so I was pretty pumped returning.
It was a dreary day, we all had little sleep and by the time we got to the Australian Open, we found out that the court we had bought tickets for was jam-packed with doubles. DOUBLES. Now I’m all for equality but I’m sorry, I’m pretty keen on singles. For starters, I’m a single pringle, I prefer escalators in single file (less confusion that way) and if Beyonce named her song “All the double ladies” I doubt that it would become as successful (would still be a stellar song tho as beyone is bae). But since we’d already bought these seats, we decided to give these doubles people a chance…
Here’s what I learned from double matches - the speed at which that fluro ball is moving is outta this world (twice the amount of people means twice the ball drama), you see more hi-fives and fist-pumps in a double than you would with candid mates and each time a point is won (ie when the audience clap) you’ll see the teams talking to each other about strategy in a ‘nonchalant’ manner…

To be frank, I’ve got no idea about the majority of the people who were playing. All I remember is Hingis played at one point, these two lads (both with the last name Lopez) played in the second match and in the third, we saw Hewitt play.
Since he was one of the few tennis players I know of, photo spam was at its highest.

During this match, nearly every seat of the court was filled because of Hewitt. The crowd was boisterous, all of us longing for him and the other lad on his team who wasn’t Hewitt to win - ‘COMMMME ON’, “Aussie Aussie Aussie OI OI OI” and “WOOOOO” were popular chants. There were cheers for dayz, in such unison that it gave Australian choirs a run for their money.
Boy, it must’ve been awkward as hell for the opposing team….
Even Hewitt himself was in on the nonchalant strategy talk…

I’m v sorry and perhaps this may cause an outburst amongst Australians alike, but Hewitt, you were getting absolutely slammed. He and his mate lost and we ended up watching his last Grand Slam match.
We then watched a match between Berdych vs some other man who was not Berdych. By this time, sleep was beckoning us so my family and I were miserable, barely functioning, tryna deny the fact that we were defeated with fatigue. We eventually left before the game was over as 7 hours was much too long at the Aus Open.
Lesson of the day - give doubles a chance. There’s twice the drama and the strategy talk is pretty entertaining to watch.
